The running back position is probably the most interesting position group to watch in training camp and preseason. It was clear this offseason that the Buffalo Bills wanted to add a better pass catcher and originally thought the answer was going to be J.D. McKissic, who reportedly agreed to a deal and then decided to return to Washington.

The Bills would then decide to sign free agent Duke Johnson, who has caught 40 or more receptions in five of his seven years in the league. He certainly would have addressed that need but then the Buffalo Bills drafted James Cook in the second round and he looks to be the favorite to solidify that role in this offense.

When looking at this depth chart, Buffalo likely only keeps three running backs on the roster and the training camp battle could really be between Duke Johnson and Zack Moss as Cook and Devin Singletary are almost guaranteed to be on the 53-man roster this year.

However, it is the addition of Cook that really makes this a discussion and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Duke Johnson being the player dropping on the depth chart and potentially off the 53-man roster.
