Buffalo Bills and Stefon Diggs agree to a contract extension

The fact that the Buffalo Bills and Stefon Diggs were able to agree to a contract extension wasn’t all that surprising. Since joining the Bills, Diggs has had career years with two Pro Bowl nominations and the combination of him and Josh Allen creates one of the best quarterback-wide receiver combinations in the league.

The reason this move is notable is because of the landscape of the NFL over the past few months as top-tier wide receivers looking for new contracts would ultimately end up playing for new teams.

Each situation is unique, and there have been some occasions where the team has been willing to pay the player with one of the top contracts but they still wanted to leave, like Davante Adams in Green Bay.

The A.J. Brown trade is a situation where there were conflicting reports about the reasoning behind the trade and where the disconnect was and Turon Davenport details both sides of the story well in this article.

Ultimately, a contract extension requires two things: the team willing and able to pay that player at near market value and the player having a desire to stay with the team long-term.

After agreeing to his contract extension, Diggs met with the media and talked about how much it felt like a family based on conversations and relations from ownership down to the coaches. While winning certainly helps, these types of comments are a testament to what Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott have been able to do in terms of turning this franchise around and building a culture off the field.
