Sean McDermott gives a positive update for the Buffalo Bills’ top cornerback

One of the biggest questions for the Buffalo Bills this offseason is when Tre’Davious White might be ready to return. The former All-Pro cornerback suffered a torn ACL against the New Orleans Saints on Thanksgiving night.

White is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL and is arguably one of the most important players on this roster after quarterback Josh Allen. He has regularly been asked to cover the opposing team’s top wide receiver and more times than not has won that matchup.

Tre’Davious White is ‘on schedule’ according to the Buffalo Bills’ head coach

With the Buffalo Bills holding their first OTA of the offseason, Sean McDermott met with the media prior to the first practice. It isn’t surprising that one of the questions he was asked was how Tre’Davious White’s recovery was going. According to Jenna Cottrell, McDermott said that he is “on schedule” and that he has been impressed with the cornerback’s work ethic through the process.

Certainly, the hope is that Tre’Davious White is able to be back by the start of the season. It would help solidify the position and create a training camp battle between Dane Jackson and Kaiir Elam for the starting job opposite White.

However, if White is not ready by Week 1 then Jackson and Elam essentially become the starters as there aren’t many likely options after those two. When considering the schedule to start the season, and the offenses the Bills will play, this could create a problem.

It is one of the reasons it might make sense for the team to look to add a veteran cornerback as a backup plan. They could compete for a starting spot until White is able to return and at worst, they would become good depth at the position.

However, considering Tre’Davious White is on schedule the team may not explore this option until training camp and when they have a better idea of when White might be ready to return.
