C.J. Brewer was with the Buffalo Bills last weekend during their rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. The team saw enough to sign him to a contract after the minicamp and he was one of four players they signed on Monday.
This is a breakdown of what defensive tackle C.J. Brewer did at Coastal Carolina and how he might fit on this Buffalo Bills’ defense.
Stats/Measurables
Height: 6’2″
Weight: 290 pounds
C.J. Brewer spent five seasons at Coastal Carolina and played in 56 games over that stretch. He had 231 total tackles, 32 tackles for a loss, 16 sacks, and five forced fumbles.
In the last two seasons, he had some of his best seasons with 10.5 sacks and 20.5 tackles for a loss. Last season, Brewer was recognized for his performance and named to the first-team All-Sun Belt team.
How does he fit on the Buffalo Bills’ defense?
While C.J. Brewer didn’t get drafted in last month’s NFL Draft, he has generated plenty of interest after that. He initially agreed to terms with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent but that didn’t work out as he was trying out with the Bills this past weekend.
It is worth noting that of the four players the Bills signed after the rookie minicamp, two of them are defensive tackles. In addition to Brewer, the team also signed Prince Emili and both are very similar players as they are under-sized and utilize their quickness more to make plays.
Both players will likely be competing for the same spot on the 53-man roster as that final defensive tackle in the rotation and could be a backup to Ed Oliver as the three tech. The team made plenty of changes this offseason and it wouldn’t be that surprising if Brewer or Emili ended up on the Buffalo Bills’ 53-man roster.
