Buffalo Bills fifth round pick Khalil Shakir is excited to meet the team’s number one wide receiver

This weekend the Buffalo Bills are holding their rookie minicamp, which for the coaching staff is really their first chance to see the team’s eight draft picks from last month’s NFL Draft. One of the players that have generated excitement is fifth round draft pick Khalil Shakir out of Boise State.

Shakir showed to be a versatile player during his time at Boise State as he averaged just under five receptions per game but also had almost two rushing attempts per game over his four seasons there. This versatility has a chance to make the offense even more dynamic than it previously was.

After the first practice of rookie minicamp, Shakir shared that the excitement goes both ways. He met with the media and was asked what players he has had a chance to talk with so far.

Shakir did say he has spoken a little with Gabriel Davis, who offered to help and let him know if he needed anything, but he is excited to meet all the players and particularly Stefon Diggs, according to Matthew Bove.

"“I have been watching those dudes for a while, guys like Stefon Diggs. To me that is just mind-blowing. By the way, I am not the type to sit here and try and be cool.”"

Shakir went on to say that he is excited to learn from Stefon Diggs.

The good news for the rookie is there may not be a better player to learn from at the position. Diggs also was a fifth round pick back in 2015 by the Minnesota Vikings and over the years has developed into one of the top wide receivers in the league.

Since joining the Bills, Diggs has had back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons and made the Pro Bowl each of the past two years. He recently signed a four-year contract extension that will keep him in Buffalo potentially for the rest of his career.

As a rookie, Shakir may have a tough time getting consistent playing time but he is a player that in the coming years should see his role grow, particularly inside at the slot receiver position.
