In the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills selected wide receiver Khalil Shakir out of Boise State. While Shakir may not have a clear path to playing time as a rookie like James Cook, this is a great player to add in rookie drafts in dynasty fantasy football as he has tremendous potential starting in 2023.

Let’s take a closer look at what Khalil Shakir might do as a rookie and how he could become a bigger part of the offense down the road.

What is Khalil Shakir’s role in the Buffalo Bills’ offense as a rookie?

At Boise State, Khalil Shakir did a little bit of everything with 208 receptions and 2,878 receiving yards while also adding 71 rushing attempts, 414 rushing yards, and 24 total touchdowns.

This versatility should give him a chance to get on the field as a rookie but it likely won’t be consistent playing time, unless there is an injury to a player higher up on the depth chart.

What is Khalil Shakir’s role past the 2022 season with the Buffalo Bills?

This is where Khalil Shakir’s should become a bigger part of the Bills’ offense and he should be a factor in fantasy football. Shakir has a good chance to be the long-term answer inside as the team’s starting slot receiver.

This offseason the Buffalo Bills released Cole Beasley after three seasons as the primary slot receiver and in the past two seasons had 82 receptions. This season, the role will likely be split between Jamison Crowder and Isaiah McKenzie.

However, neither appear to be a long-term answer as Crowder was signed to only a one-year deal and McKenzie signed a two-year contract. The former Boise State wide receiver has the talent to take over and hold this spot in the offense moving forward.

When considering he will have Josh Allen throwing him the ball, he has a great chance of being a factor in fantasy football, particularly in PPR leagues. In the later rounds of rookie drafts, there may not be a player with more upside than Khalil Shakir.
