The 2022 NFL Draft was just a week ago and for most NFL teams the focus now turns to the 2023 NFL Draft. For the Buffalo Bills, they currently are scheduled to have only six draft picks in next year’s NFL Draft.

In 2020, the Bills traded a conditional 2023 seventh round draft pick to the Carolina Panthers for linebacker Andre Smith. The team re-signed Smith last offseason to a two-year deal and this is a move that has certainly worked out well with Smith playing over 60% of the special teams snaps each of the past two years.

Buffalo Bills are not expected to get any compensatory picks in 2023

One way the Buffalo Bills might have gotten a pick back is with a compensatory draft pick. These are draft picks awarded to teams between Rounds 3 and 7 and are based on a formula taking into account free agents lost and free agents added from the prior offseason.

However, that is for only a part of free agency and that time frame ended this week. This essentially closes the window and teams can now get an idea of what picks may be rewarded next year. Lance Zierlein at NFL.com made his predictions and according to Zierlein, the Buffalo Bills are unlikely to have no compensatory picks.

This is not surprising when looking at the players they added most notably Von Miller but also Tim Settle and O.J. Howard. The notable free agents they lost were cornerback Levi Wallace, quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and defensive tackle Harrison Phillips.

The Buffalo Bills have not gotten many compensatory draft picks over the years and the last time was in 2016 when they received a fourth and sixth round pick.

The compensatory picks will not be finalized until the next offseason but the Buffalo Bills should not be planning on receiving any additional picks unless they make trades over the next calendar year.
