The Buffalo Bills announce they have brought back quarterback Matt Barkley on a one-year deal
It has been a busy few days for the Buffalo Bills at the quarterback position. On Sunday, the team announced they had traded with the Cleveland Browns for Case Keenum and on Monday they completed the quarterback room by bringing back a familiar face by signing Matt Barkley to a one-year deal.
Matt Barkley joined the Bills in 2018 during Josh Allen’s rookie season and the team was dealing with a number of injuries at the position. Barkley in fact started a game less than two weeks after signing and throwing for 232 yards and two touchdowns in a win over the New York Jets.
He would remain with the team the next two seasons before Buffalo decided to bring in free agent Mitchell Trubisky as the backup last offseason. During his first tenure with the team, Barkley would appear in eight games, with the one start, and throw for 788 passing yards with three touchdowns, and four interceptions.
After the Bills signed Trubisky, Barkley would sign with the Tennessee Titans but would be signed off their practice squad by the Carolina Panthers. He would have a brief stop with the Panthers before also joining the Atlanta Falcons before the end of the season.
Matt Barkley is unlikely to make the active roster but should be heavily involved with the Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills have typically only had two quarterbacks on their active roster which would likely be Josh Allen and Case Keenum. However, the team has always had at least one or two quarterbacks on their practice squad and this is where Barkley would fit in.
The past few seasons this role has been Davis Webb’s but he signed with the New York Giants this offseason. It makes sense for Buffalo to bring back someone like Matt Barkley as a mentor and an extra voice in the position room to help support Josh Allen and also help Ken Dorsey as he takes over as offensive coordinator.
