Buffalo Bills Trade Target: Danielle Hunter

The final player is defensive end Danielle Hunter, who according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler is not being “actively shopped” but could be available due to the Minnesota Vikings having some cap issues. Ryan Talbot at syracuse.com followed up on Fowler’s tweet that the Buffalo Bills were one of the teams to call about Hunter.

Danielle Hunter had breakout seasons in 2018 and 2019 when he had back-to-back seasons with 14.5 sacks and made the Pro Bowl each season. He would suffer a neck injury that forced him to miss the entire 2020 season before returning last year. Hunter would have six sacks in seven games before a torn pec cost him the remainder of the season.

He does have the biggest cap hit of any of the rumored players the Buffalo Bills have been interested in at over $26 million. However, at only 28 years old the Bills might consider renegotiating his contract to spread out that cap hit and also keep him with the franchise past 2023, which is when his current deal would end.

The defensive end position is probably the biggest concern for the Buffalo Bills and this is the one position they may be willing to spend big at. They have added a number of draft picks over the years but haven’t been able to put together a consistent pass rush. With the caliber of quarterbacks in the AFC, getting pressure on the quarterback is going to be critical to their success.

While this is not a prediction that a trade happens, this is the one that makes the most sense to me and the one that general manager Brandon Beane should prioritize.
