Could new Giants’ GM Joe Schoen trade Saquon Barkley to his former team?

Another former first round pick that has an injury history that could be available is New York Giants’ running back Saquon Barkley. He is similar to McCaffrey in that he has had some great seasons in his career with over 1,000 rushing yards in his first two years in the league with 17 rushing touchdowns in that stretch.

However, Barkley missed almost the entire 2020 season due to a knee injury and this past year looked like he was still trying to work his way back. The Giants have to decide if this offseason if they want to work out a long term deal with him entering the final year of his rookie contract. If they don’t think they will or believe they will be unable to work out a new deal, it might make sense to trade him.

At the NFL Combine, Joe Schoen reportedly said he was “open to anything” according to Adam Beasley.

Barkley is a bigger running back than McCaffrey and could more directly impact the running game while also helping as a receiver out of the backfield. If he is healthy, this is probably a better fit for what Buffalo might be looking for.
