Sam Darnold

In 2018, Sam Darnold was the second quarterback taken in the NFL Draft after being selected second overall by the New York Jets. The hope was that he would become the franchise quarterback that the Jets had been looking for since probably the days of Joe Namath.

It didn’t work out that way and the Jets would trade Darnold to the Panthers last offseason. After the trade, Carolina would pick up his fifth-year option, which is a move they are probably regretting at this point.

Sam Darnold was not able to turn his career around with the Panthers with 2,527 passing yards, 14 total touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. The Panthers now find themselves in a tough situation because it is clear that Darnold is not a long-term solution option and are stuck with a player that has nearly $19 million guaranteed this coming season.

If the Panthers decide that it is worth taking the dead cap and to start fresh at the position, Sam Darnold could be looking for a new team this offseason. This could be a great opportunity for Buffalo to add an experienced quarterback who may not have been in the best situations to be successful.

It also would make sense in terms of supporting Josh Allen, as the Bills’ starting quarterback and Sam Darnold are friends off the field. They have trained during the offseason together in California and adding a player like Darnold could help the team, even if he doesn’t play meaningful snaps.
