The Buffalo Bills have a number of decisions to make at the wide receiver position this offseason that include Isaiah McKenzie and Emmanuel Sanders, who are set to be free agents. This is a closer look at Emmanuel Sanders’ career and his first season with Buffalo last year.

Career Overview

Emmanuel Sanders started his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers have they selected him in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He primarily was a backup wide receiver the first two years with the Steelers before catching 111 passes, 1,366 receiving yards, and seven touchdowns in his final two years in Pittsburgh.

Sanders would then sign as a free agent with the Denver Broncos and play 5.5 seasons and had some of the best years of his career there. He was selected to two Pro Bowls and had three years with over 1,000 receiving yards.

In 2019, he was traded midseason to the San Francisco 49ers and after the season signed with the New Orleans Saints, which is where he played before joining Buffalo this past offseason.

2021 Season Recap

This past season, Emmanuel Sanders began the year as the starter opposite Stefon Diggs. In the first six games, Sanders would average 68 receiving yards per game and had four receiving touchdowns.

However, as the season went on Sanders would deal with some injuries and eventually lose the starting job to Gabriel Davis. In the two playoff games, Sanders had only four targets, with three receptions, 52 receiving yards, and one touchdown.

Should the Buffalo Bills re-sign Emmanuel Sanders?

The decision ultimately may not be up to the Buffalo Bills as Emmanuel Sanders has hinted at the possibility of retiring this offseason. However, if he does decide to continue his career he did say Buffalo would be a place he would absolutely consider.

As was evident in the Super Bowl, teams can never have enough depth at the wide receiver position. This is certainly true for the Buffalo Bills and having a player like Emmanuel Sanders certainly helps in that regard.

However, if the Bills were to re-sign Emmanuel Sanders he should return as a backup and not take away playing time from Gabriel Davis. If the veteran wants to return to Buffalo for a limited role, this is a signing that would make sense.
