Buffalo Bills Negative: The Safeties are getting older

Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer each just had career seasons, so it might not seem like the time to talk about potential regression, but both players are now in their 30’s. Poyer and Hyde are two anchors of the Bills defense and are a huge reason this defense never gets burned over the top.

Safeties can deteriorate quickly, so the Bills must make a play for a championship now, while both of these studs are still at the top of their game. They have invested some late-round draft capital into depth at the position with Damar Hamlin and Jaquan Johnson and it will be interesting to see how those players develop.

The Bills got a steal when they signed Hyde to a five-year $30 million deal after the 2016 season, but he’s going to get a little bit more expensive after inking a two-year, $19.5 million extension this past March.

Poyer originally signed a four-year, $13 million deal the same offseason that the Bills added Hyde and he also inked a two-year, $19.5 million extension, doing so before the 2020-21 season. Part of what made this safety tandem so great was the value of their contracts, now they must step up and continue to make high-impact plays as they get older and more handsomely paid.
