It is rare for teams to find players who can make an impact at this point in the season. However, over the weekend the Buffalo Bills may have gotten just that when the New York Jets released Shaq Lawson.

The pass rusher was originally a first round pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2016 and in his final three years with the team, all in Sean McDermott’s defensive scheme, he had 14.5 sacks and 35 QB hits.

The Bills elected to not pick up Lawson’s fifth-year option and he left in free agency after the 2019 season and signed with Miami Dolphins. He would be traded to the Houston Texans after only one season with the Dolphins. His time with Houston would be even shorter and he was traded a few months later to the New York Jets.

In 14 games with the Jets this year, including seven starts, he would record one sack and five QB hits. Lawson was released on Saturday and cleared waivers on Monday which now means any team that signs him could add him to play in the playoffs.

Why the Buffalo Bills should sign Shaq Lawson to their practice squad

The stats this year for Lawson are not necessarily impressive but the addition of the veteran pass rusher would be a great move for this defense. He is a player that already knows the coaching staff and this defensive scheme well considering he spent three years in it.

Lawson also had a career year in his final season with Buffalo with 6.5 sacks, a total he hasn’t matched in his two years since leaving.

For the Buffalo Bills, signing Lawson would be a great move considering how they use their defensive line. The coaching staff likes to rotate their linemen frequently and this year they had only one player play more than 50% of the defensive snaps (Jerry Hughes). However, they had five play 20% or more with a sixth (Boogie Basham) just missing the cut-off with 18% of the defensive snaps.

A player who knows this defense, has had success in this defense, and plays a position that the Buffalo Bills could use depth at makes this a move that makes too much sense.
