The 2021 NFL Trade Deadline officially passed on Tuesday afternoon and the Buffalo Bills didn’t make any trades.

General manager Brandon Beane has not been afraid to make a trade during his time with the Bills, like in 2017 when he traded for wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin at the trade deadline. However, this year the Buffalo Bills weren’t able to strike any deals during a relatively quiet trade deadline.

The Bills had plenty of areas they could have looked to add some players, like at cornerback or trying to improve their run game. Josina Anderson tweeted out after the deadline had passed that it seemed there was a number of reasons for the quiet trade deadline around the league, and not necessarily with the Bills, that included injuries, depth, and cap issues.

That final reason could have been why the Buffalo Bills were quiet as they were limited in the cap space they had in a year where the salary cap wasn’t necessarily as high as expected.

Buffalo Bills reportedly were busy trying to get a deal done

Even though the Buffalo Bills didn’t get any deals done, it wasn’t due to a lack of trying on Beane’s part. On Tuesday morning, Matt Parrino wrote that Peter Schrager said on Good Morning Football the Bills had made calls to the Denver Broncos about pass rusher Von Miller.

In the end, the Broncos traded Miller to the Rams for a second and third round pick.

Another potential trade that was reportedly close was the Bills sending backup quarterback Mitchell Trubisky to the Washington Football Team, according to CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso.

This would have certainly been surprising and would have been a risk on the Buffalo Bills part. Trubisky is one of the better backup quarterbacks in the league and a great safety blanket for a team that has Super Bowl aspirations.

However, Trubisky is on a one-year deal and almost certainly going to leave in the offseason so if the compensation from Washington would be greater than a compensatory pick, it would have made sense.

Now that the trade deadline has passed, unless there is a surprise release in the coming days or weeks, the Buffalo Bills roster is relatively set as they try to secure a playoff spot and make a deep run hopefully to the Super Bowl.
