Josh Allen sitting near top of MVP power ranking after Week 5
Honorable Mentions
At this point of the season, there are still plenty of players that can be considered in the MVP race. While the player who ultimately wins the award is likely to be a quarterback, it is worth mentioning a few players at other positions who could make a strong case if they continue playing at the level they have.
One name that comes to mind is running back Derrick Henry, who has 142 rushing attempts (48 more than the next player), 640 rushing yards (117 more rushing yards than the next player) and seven rushing touchdowns (2 more than the next player). He has essentially been carrying the Titans offense through the first five games and been really their only productive player on that side of the ball.
It is rare for defensive players to win awards but it has been done a few times and the last time was New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor winning the award in 1986. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Trevon Diggs win the award this year with the way he is playing and forcing turnovers with six interceptions through five games. It is hard to imagine the Cowboys’ cornerback continuing at this rate but if he does, it would be a historic season that would certainly have to have him in the MVP race discussion.
