Buffalo Bills: Grades for every position group in Week 4 against the Texans
Defensive Ends
It took three weeks before second round pick Boogie Basham got a chance to play in an NFL game but he certainly made the most of his opportunities on Sunday against the Texans. He finished the game with two total tackles and his first career sack.
Another player who had a strong game was A.J. Epenesa as the second-year defensive end once again got close to a sack but had to settle for one QB hit this week. He ranked near the top of his draft class in pressures entering this week and if he continues to play like this the sacks will start to accumulate.
Grade: B
Defensive Tackles
For the third straight week, Star Lotulelei started at defensive tackle and for the third straight week the Bills defense had a dominating performance against the run. They allowed only 48 rushing yards and the Texans to have an average of 2.7 yards per attempt.
He also added a sack and this makes the second straight game with a sack. This has typically not been part of what he brings to this defense but he is certainly making an impact putting pressure on the quarterback.
Grade: A
Linebackers
The Buffalo Bills lost Matt Milano in the first half to a hamstring injury but it didn’t slow this position group down much. Tremaine Edmunds had a solid performance by leading the team in tackles with six and recording his first interception since 2019.
A.J. Klein, who replaced Milano, had one total tackle and one pass defended. In addition, Tyler Matakevich got a chance to see extended playing time on defense with the lead the Bills had and made the most of it with four total tackles and his first career interception.
Grade: A
Secondary
The Buffalo Bills had two new starters in the secondary this week with Jordan Poyer and Taron Johnson out with injuries. However, it didn’t matter as they put together their best performance of the year by holding Davis Mills to 87 passing yards, coming away with two interceptions (one by Jaquan Johnson, one by Micah Hyde) and Cam Lewis forcing a fumble.
This group shut down really anything the Texans tried to do through the air and was as close to a perfect performance as fans will find in the NFL.
