The Buffalo Bills cut their roster down to 53-players on Tuesday and will now begin the process of building out their practice squad. The team will be able to add 16 players to their practice squad this year and one of those players is reportedly a former draft pick by the Bills.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Buffalo Bills are re-signing quarterback Jake Fromm and will be adding him to their practice squad.

The former University of Georgia quarterback at one time was considered one of the top quarterback prospects. However, during the 2020 NFL Draft he slid all the way to the fifth round where the Bills selected him. They were likely not looking for a quarterback but the value and the potential were too much to pass up on.

Fromm was a relative unknown for most of his rookie season. The reason is that fans didn’t get to see much of him due to the pandemic. The NFL canceled the preseason and the Bills used Fromm as an emergency quarterback, essentially having him practice away from the team in case there was an outbreak and he could step in as the starter.

Jake Fromm showed some good things in the Buffalo Bills’ preseason games

This season, Jake Fromm got a chance to play in an NFL game and had an up and down preseason. In his first game, Fromm was the last quarterback to take the field but led the Buffalo Bills down the field to get them into field goal range to secure the win over the Detroit Lions.

The highlight of that game was a 42-yard completion to Marquez Stevenson on fourth down on the final drive.

The second preseason game was a different story as he struggled against the Chicago Bears as he went 3 of 7 for 20 passing yards and was sacked twice.

However, he bounced back against the Green Bay Packers and completed 10 of 16 passes for 87 yards as well as adding a rushing touchdown.

The return of Jake Fromm makes perfect sense for the Buffalo Bills because the backup quarterback is likely to be a need again last offseason. The team did sign veteran Mitchell Trubisky this offseason but it is only a one-year deal and he is almost certain to be playing somewhere else next year.

If Fromm can continue to develop, he could be a good option to replace Trubisky next year as the backup to Josh Allen.
