Detroit Lions quarterback Tim Boyle (12) is tackled by Buffalo Bills defensive end Darryl Johnson (92) during the second half of the preseason game at Ford Field in Detroit on Friday, Aug. 13, 2021. /

Defensive End (7)

Starter: Jerry Hughes, Mario Addison

Backup: Greg Rousseau, AJ Epenesa, Boogie Basham, Efe Obada, Darryl Johnson

Cut: Mike Love

The defensive end position is probably the most exciting battle because so many players are playing so well. This competition is purely a numbers game and while many fans suggest Beane should flip a player or two for some picks I am not quite sure that Buffalo wants to get rid of any of these guys.

I have never seen a defensive line with such a diverse skillset and this much versatility. Three guys could slide inside situationally and several different styles of edge defenders.

Jerry Hughes and Mario Addison will likely start Week 1 however with the way Greg Rousseau and AJ Epenesa have started camp, I would not be shocked if they are receiving the highest percentage of snaps by the halfway point of the season. Boogie Basham had a fantastic game against the Bears and although he may be inactive on game day he can easily fill in if need be and can shift inside.

Efe Obada can play defensive end or tackle whenever Buffalo needs and is a physical freak who could have a breakout year if he makes the team and Darryl Johnson is a special teams animal who has received high praise from several coaches during camp while continuing his development as a pass rusher.

The only cut here is Mike Love and he is a strong practice squad candidate and has shown some flashes during the preseason.

The Buffalo Bills completely turned around their defensive line. This group’s ceiling is extremely high and although seven defensive ends seems a little excessive. They all can provide very strong value to Buffalo this season.
