Third String Quarterback
This battle was intriguing because both Davis Webb and Jake Fromm played well against the Detroit Lions. However, I am glad I framed this battle the way it is starting to play out. Webb and Fromm are competing against each other for the third spot but their play will determine if that third spot comes on the practice squad or the 53-man roster. After week one of the preseason, I would have given the edge to Webb and put him on the 53-man roster.
Both players had some expectations heading into the matchup with the Bears. Surprisingly they both disappointed pretty significantly. Webb was able to put together a couple of decent throws but turned the ball over twice by fumbling. Fromm was anything but better as he struggled to get the ball out taking two sacks and threw for 20 yards and had a 43% completion percentage.
While both of these guys had to endure pretty poor and sad offensive line play from the likes of Jordan Devey and Bobby Hart, those numbers are still really bad. One or both players may be a part of the Bills plans in 2021 but after that performance, it looks like it will be a part of the practice squad.
The good news for Buffalo is that their second-string quarterback looked like he should be an NFL starter and it seems that if Josh Allen has to miss any time due to injury the Bills should be able to win with Trubisky behind center.
I still think the Buffalo Bills only keep three quarterbacks this season and I still give the edge to Webb. Webb will also likely be willing to make some sort of deal with Buffalo to end up on the practice squad. Last season players and coaches raved about Webb and the work he put in to help Allen and the team prepare each week. Fromm was a draft pick by Beane but it seems like Webb brings more value on and off the field.
