Mitchell Trubisky had an impressive performance against his former franchise.
One of the top storylines entering the preseason game for the Buffalo Bills against the Chicago Bears was Mitchell Trubisky returning to Chicago to play his former team. While it was only preseason, Trubisky has to feel good with the performance he had.
The former 2017 second overall pick started the game for the Bills with the team keeping Josh Allen on the sideline for the second straight game. Trubisky started the game by leading the Bills on four straight touchdown drives.
The Bills’ first touchdown came on a fourth down play where Trubisky tossed it outside to Devin Singletary, who broke a few tackles on his way to the end zone. The next drive Trubisky got a chance to throw a touchdown pass, this time finding Jake Kumerow running across the back of the end zone.
In the second quarter, Trubisky led the team on two more touchdown drives, both of which ended with a Reggie Gilliam one-yard touchdown run. After one drive that ended in a punt, Mitchell Trubisky led the team down into field goal range on two consecutive drives that end with Tyler Bass’ field goals.
Trubisky finished the first half going 20 of 28 for 220 passing yards with one touchdown. He also had one run for 11 yards.
Was playcalling the issue for Mitchell Trubisky?
When considering how good Mitchell Trubisky looked, Warren Sharp asked a very valid question about whether Trubisky’s failures are tied to the playcalling during his time with the Bears.
Brian Daboll is considered one of the best offensive coordinators in the NFL and after interviewing for a few head coaching jobs this offseason returned to Buffalo. However, it is almost guaranteed that his return is going to be short-lived and it would be surprising if Daboll is not a head coach somewhere else next year.
While it is only preseason, fans should feel good about what Mitchell Trubisky has shown through two games. He clearly has a good handle on this offense and if there is ever a time that the Buffalo Bills need to turn to Trubisky, he looks like a quarterback that can keep this offense on track.
