Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (14) catches a pass against Buffalo Bills defensive back Josh Thomas (36) during the first half of the preseason game at Ford Field in Detroit on Friday, Aug. 13, 2021.

The two backup safety spots for the Buffalo Bills seemed like they would likely go to Jaquan Johnson and Damar Hamlin. These are two safeties the Bills drafted in consecutive years, Johnson in 2020 and Hamlin this year, but Josh Thomas is making it a strong case that he should be one of the two backup safeties.

Thomas was signed as an undrafted free agent last offseason and spent most of the year on the practice squad but was active for two games. He finished the year with one total tackle.

In the game against the Lions, Thomas finished with three total tackles and one tackle for a loss. Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier was complimentary of Thomas after the game.

The battle for the backup safety spots is another one to watch and it is not safe to assume that Johnson and Hamlin automatically get them just because they were draft picks. If Josh Thomas has another game against the Bears like he did last week, it will be hard for the coaching staff to cut him.
