The Buffalo Bills have locked up their franchise quarterback, Josh Allen, through the 2028 season.

One of the biggest storylines this offseason for the Buffalo Bills was whether or not they would be able to agree to a long-term deal with Josh Allen. That question was reportedly answered on Friday with the Bills announcing they have agreed on a six-year extension with Josh Allen.

This means Allen is under contract through the 2028 season. Shortly after the news broke, ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted that the contract was worth $258 million with $150 million guaranteed.

The average salary of $43 million per year, is two million behind Patrick Mahomes, who leads the league with an average salary of $45 million according to Spotrac.

The two sides didn’t appear too concerned about a contract extension and Brandon Beane appeared comfortable putting it off to next season. It was reported earlier in the week that Beane had set a deadline of the regular season to get a contract extension done.

Buffalo Bills get their franchise quarterback in Josh Allen

Allen joined the Buffalo Bills in 2018 when the team selected him seventh overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. He became the starting quarterback in Week 2 of his rookie season. While he struggled initially, he continued to develop and improve every season.

This past season was by far his best as he completed nearly 70% of his passes, throwing for over 4,500 passing yards with 37 passing touchdowns and adding an additional eight rushing touchdowns. He would go on to earn his first Pro Bowl selection and finish second in the MVP voting.

The quarterback position has been an issue for the Buffalo Bills since Jim Kelly retired in the late 1990s. They have gone the veteran route with players like Drew Bledsoe and Kyle Orton as well as used high draft picks on players like J.P. Losman and E.J. Manuel that haven’t panned out.

That issue now appears to be a thing of the past the Bills have found a franchise quarterback that will be in place to lead this offense for the foreseeable future.
