Can Jake Kumerow earn that final spot on the Buffalo Bills wide receiver depth chart?

This offseason, Buffalo Bills wide receiver Jake Kumerow has been in the headlines as he has been part of the Aaron Rodgers drama that dominated the NFL storylines. One of the reasons was Rodgers was upset with the Packers after they released Kumerow shortly after he gave the wide receiver a vote of confidence.

Kumerow joined the Buffalo Bills shortly after being released by the Green Bay Packers and spent most of the season with the team. He had a brief run with the New Orleans Saints but returned to the Bills after the end of the season.

2020 Stats

Kumerow appeared in six games last season with the Buffalo Bills, primarily playing on special teams (21% of the total snaps). However, he did play a little on offense and had one reception which ended up being a 22-yard touchdown. The throw by Josh Allen was one of his best of the season and the play was one of the top regular season highlights last year.

The touchdown also helped the Buffalo Bills tie an NFL record being the 13th player to catch a touchdown last year.

Expectations for the 2021 season with the Buffalo Bills

While Jake Kumerow was a favorite of Aaron Rodgers, he will have an uphill climb to make the Buffalo Bills 53-man roster this season. The Bills are deep at the position and there really is only one spot up for grabs entering training camp.

That battle is going to come down to players like Isaiah Hodgins, Marquez Stevenson, Brandon Powell, Tanner Gentry and Kumerow. While Kumerow is a player who can contribute on special teams, that final spot could go to a player like Stevenson or Powell if the Bills aren’t comfortable with Isaiah McKenzie as their returner this season.

If Jake Kumerow doesn’t make the 53-man roster, it wouldn’t be surprising if he returned to the Buffalo Bills as a member of the practice squad.
