The cornerback position is certainly going to be a point of focus in this training camp for the Buffalo Bills. The team is essentially entering camp with two spots on the depth chart set with Tre’Davious White as the top cornerback and Taron Johnson as the team’s starting nickel.

The other outside cornerback position is likely to come down to Levi Wallace and Dane Jackson while the depth after these starters is anyone’s guess at this point.

While there is plenty of uncertainty, it also begs the question of the Bills should be concerned about the inexperience the team has at the position. The Bills have only four players at cornerback who has played in more than eight regular-season games with Tre’Davious White (61 career games), Taron Johnson (39 games), and Levi Wallace (35 games).

The fourth cornerback is Siran Neal (47 games) but a majority of his experience has been on special teams and he has played only 306 snaps on defense.

The other players on the team are Dane Jackson, who was a seventh round pick last season, Cam Lewis, who was an undrafted free agent signing in 2019 and did play in five games last season, Rachad Wildgoose, who was a sixth round draft pick this year, and two undrafted free agents (OIaijah Griffin and Nick McCloud).

Should the Buffalo Bills add a veteran cornerback?

If the Buffalo Bills were to lose one of their starters, the cornerback position could be a potential concern. While some of these players could develop into quality starters, at this point they are still unknowns. For a team that has Super Bowl aspirations, this is not necessarily ideal.

This is why it wouldn’t be surprising to see the team add a veteran at the position between now and the regular season. While there are players like Steven Nelson, who could step in as a starter, there are other veterans who could just be added as a safety net in the unfortunate situation the defense loses a starter for an extended period of time.

This group would include players like Brian Poole, Gareon Conley, or even bringing back Josh Norman. The Bills could then move some of these younger players, like Griffin or McCloud, to the practice squad. If a scenario arises where a starter is forced to miss time, the Buffalo Bills would then have more options and would be better equipped to address it.

This is something that likely won’t be addressed before training camp but if the coaching staff is concerned some of these players are not ready to contribute, they could be looking at the free agent market before the start of the season.
