Where does Efe Obada fit at defensive end for the Buffalo Bills with the new additions?

The Buffalo Bills invested heavily on their defensive line in the 2021 NFL Draft by using their first two picks on Greg Rousseau and Carlos Basham Jr. However, they made a move in free agency as well that could provide more value, at least this season, by signing free agent Efe Obada.

The former Carolina Panthers’ pass rusher has improved each of his three seasons in the NFL after joining the Panthers as part of the International Player Pathway Program. While he will have plenty of competition, Efe Obada could be the perfect fit for this defense.

2020 Stats

Last year, Efe Obada played in 16 games and had 18 total tackles, 5.5 sacks, 15 QB hits, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.

Expectations for the 2021 season with the Buffalo Bills

Efe Obada is the perfect player to have on this Buffalo Bills defense and part of this rotation at defensive end. The reason is that Obada has shown he can be a very effective pass rusher with limited snaps.

The 5.5 sacks and 15 QB hits would have been enough to lead the Buffalo Bills last year and he was able to generate that type of pressure on only 39% of the snaps.

When looking at this depth chart, there are five spots that are pretty much secured with Jerry Hughes, Mario Addison, A.J. Epenesa along with the rookies Greg Rousseau and Carlos Basham Jr. When considering the talent, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Bills keep six defensive ends on the 53-man roster this year.

That means it will likely be a competition between Efe Obada and Darryl Johnson during training camp and while Johnson has been with the team longer, Obada would be a great fit for that final spot.
