Third String: Matt Breida

Next on the depth chart is the one addition to the running back position this offseason the Buffalo Bills made. The team decided to not re-sign T.J. Yeldon and elect to go with the speedy running back Matt Breida.

Breida had a promising start to his career with the San Francisco 49ers and in his second season in 2018 he had 814 rushing yards and five total touchdowns. He played well again in 2019 but was traded to the Miami Dolphins before the 2020 season.

Last year was certainly a disappointing season for Breida as he had only 59 rushing attempts and couldn’t carve a role in the Dolphins offense even though his primary competition was undrafted rookie Myles Gaskin.

This certainly has to raise questions about what running back the Buffalo Bills are getting, either the 49ers version or the Dolphins version. If it is the 49ers version, Breida addresses a big need at the position with his speed and pass catching ability.

While Matt Breida is currently third on this depth chart, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him be cut before the start of the season in favor of some other running backs.
