Can Devin Singletary be the featured back for the Buffalo Bills in 2021?

The Buffalo Bills have plenty of potential at the running back position and one of those pieces is Devin Singletary. He was drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft and put together a promising rookie season where he averaged over five yards a carry.

This past season though he didn’t have as much success and saw some of that efficiency drop as his yards per carry dropped by more than half a yard from 2019 to 2020. In the end, it didn’t impact the offense too much with how well Josh Allen and the passing offense did.

However, for this offense to really take that next step they need to get a little more production or have a player be more of a threat out of the backfield to keep the opposing defense honest. Can Devin Singletary be that player in 2021?

2020 Stats

Devin Singletary finished the year as the Buffalo Bills leading rusher with 687 rushing yards on 156 carries, which was only five more than his rookie season. He also had two rushing touchdowns and an average of 4.4 yards per carry.

One area that he did see his numbers increase was in the passing game as he had 38 receptions on 50 targets for 269 receiving yards, and an average of 7.1 yards per reception.

Expectations for the 2021 season with the Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills are unlikely to move away from being a pass-heavy offense as long as Josh Allen plays at the same level he did last year. However, as mentioned previously the Bills need to have at least a threat from the running backs on this offense.

Devin Singletary is unlikely to become a featured running back in this offense but the one area he could make an impact, and he started to show this last year, is out of the backfield as a pass-catcher. He should continue to contribute to this offense in that way this upcoming season.
