The Buffalo Bills are set to kick off training camp at the end of this month and while they don’t have to set a depth chart until their first preseason game, the coaching staff should have some idea of what it is going to look like entering camp. This is due to the fact that they need to determine practice reps and who is playing with the first team, second team, and so on.

The quarterback position is one that doesn’t have as many question marks as some of the other positions but there is still some uncertainty at the bottom of the depth chart. With that in mind, this is my prediction on what the depth chart at quarterback looks like entering training camp for the Buffalo Bills.

Starter: Josh Allen

This is pretty straightforward as Josh Allen is the unquestioned starter and the Bills first real chance at a franchise quarterback since Jim Kelly. The former first round pick is coming off a career year and the hope is that he will be able to build on it or at least maintain what he did last season.

Backup: Mitchell Trubisky

The Buffalo Bills made a change at the backup position this offseason by electing to not re-sign Matt Barkley and instead sign Mitchell Trubisky to a one-year deal. The former second overall pick was inconsistent during his time with the Chicago Bears and is hoping to reset this season with the Bills.

There probably isn’t a better place to do this as he can learn from offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. If the need were to arise for Trubisky to step in as starting quarterback, the Bills have one of the best supporting cast of playmakers with Stefon Diggs, Cole Beasley, and Emmanuel Sanders.

Third String: Jake Fromm

This is where the questions start as the Buffalo Bills need to make a decision on who the third-string quarterback is going to be. Right now, I believe that will be Jake Fromm due to the fact that the team did draft him in the fifth round the last offseason and need to see what he can do in practice, and more so in preseason games.

Last year due to the pandemic, Fromm didn’t get a chance to see any NFL action with the preseason being canceled and him playing the role of emergency quarterback. This meant he was practicing away from the team and could be put into the starting lineup if the quarterback room had an outbreak.

Fourth String: Davis Webb

Rounding out the quarterback position is Davis Webb, who is a former third round pick and after stops with the New York Giants and New York Jets has been on the practice squad the past two years with the Bills.

Webb is a player who probably provides more value in the film room than on the field. Matt Parrino put together a detailed profile on the backup quarterback and noted that while he still hopes to play quarterback, he is also making plans for after his playing career, and coaching has been a focus.

This added focus is why Webb is so valuable to the position and would be a great player to keep around to help Josh Allen as he continues to grow. However, this may not be enough to stay with the team, and would need to show the coaching staff he could step if it was needed.
