Is Antonio Williams the spark the run game needs in 2021 for the Buffalo Bills?

Last season, the Buffalo Bills run game didn’t have big stats due in large part to the passing game being a priority. It certainly made sense with the success that Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs, and the other receivers were having.

However, one of the best performances all season came from Antonio Williams in the final regular season game. The undrafted rookie played well in the final two quarters against the Miami Dolphins and the question now is can he continue that momentum into 2021 and earn a spot on the 53-man roster.

2020 Stats

Antonio Williams joined the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent signing last year and spent most of the year on the practice squad. He did play in one game, which was Week 17 against the Miami Dolphins.

The coaching staff called Williams up due to the team wanting to rest Devin Singletary and Zack Moss heading into the playoffs. He got to play most of the second half of the blowout win over the Dolphins and had 63 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, which in terms of a stat line was one of the best any Bills running back had all season.

Expectations for 2021 with the Buffalo Bills

Antonio Williams has looked good this offseason according to media reports and I recently projected he would earn a spot on the 53-man roster this season. This is certainly not a guarantee and maybe a little wishful thinking on my part.

He would need to beat out Matt Breida for a roster spot and the Bills signed him as a free agent this offseason due in large part to the fact that he brings a speed element to the position that has been missing. However, Williams is a younger running back, who has more upside and the Bills may want to ensure they keep a player like that in the organization.

If Antonio Williams is not able to beat out Matt Breida and doesn’t make the 53-man roster he is a likely candidate to be added to the practice squad this season.
