There really aren’t many starting jobs on this defense up for grabs this season with most of the starters returning. However, one position that could see a big change is at cornerback opposite Tre’Davious White. While Levi Wallace, who was the starter last year, is returning, he will likely be pushed by second-year corner Dane Jackson.

The former seventh-round pick looked good in limited action last year and now has a chance in training camp to become the permanent starter. In five games, he had five pass breakups, one interception, and one fumble recovery.

The group of Taron Johnson, Tre’Davious White, Jordan Poyer, and Micah Hyde are now entering their fourth year playing together and have produced as one of the best secondaries in the league at times. They are familiar with each other but that other outside cornerback spot has always been the weak link.

If Dane Jackson comes in and can perform better than Wallace has, combined with an improved pass rush, there is no reason to think this group couldn’t finish the season as the best pass defense in the NFL.
