Best Buffalo Bills player to wear #6: Tom Dempsey, Kicker

Tom Dempsey, the former NFL record holder for the longest field goal at 63 yards was a part of the Buffalo Bills for the final two years of his career. Unfortunately, no pictures were able to be found of him in the #6, but this photo of him from his time with the Philadelphia Eagles will do.

Dempsey was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin but grew up in California. Signed by the New Orleans Saints, Dempsey is infamous for being born without toes on his right foot (his kicking foot) and he was one of the last “straight on” kickers in the league. Even though some teams thought his foot was like a hammer and insisted that he had an unfair advantage, he didn’t. It’s like trying to catch a ball without proper use of all of your fingers. Hard, but doable.

The call by Don Criqui of the 1970 matchup against the Detroit Lions is incredible and everyone should hear it. Dempsey would go on to make 11/17 field goals for the Buffalo Bills, good for a 64.7% accuracy rate. Other names were Dave Chapple (not to be confused with comedy star Dave Chappelle), and a few other obscure names that can be seen here.
