In a June 3rd article published by the The Buffalo News, Mitchell Trubisky explained the reason he became a part of the Buffalo Bills.
If anyone would have told you that at the start of free agency, Mitchell Trubisky would end up with the Buffalo Bills, I don’t think anyone would believe that for a minute. Funny how life changes and opportunities arise. Trubisky does admit that he originally and ideally wanted to go to a team that he would be able to compete for the starting job.
However, when the Bills came calling with the contender status that they have, Trubisky decided that it was for the betterment of his career and those in the QB room to come aboard. This sounds like a guy who is probably realizing that he may be a backup for quite some time and he’s trying to make the best of it.
A week ago I wrote about how I personally didn’t feel too hot about Trubisky leading the team in high-pressure situations and in (or to) the playoffs, god forbid that Josh Allen can’t go. However, after reading this entire interview it has me feeling just a bit better about it. I still have my reservations, but after seeing this following response about his role being a backup after starting in Chicago:
"“No matter what your role is on the team, you’ve got to come in, push yourself, and continue to get better and work at your craft. I think that’s first and foremost. Always putting the team first is a great way to go about it, so however I can help the team, whatever I can do to make them get better. I am in a little bit of a less-pressure role, but I always have to be prepared. “"
These are the words of a wiser player who has been through the rollercoaster of the NFL. I believe that Trubisky’s selflessness and willingness to run the scout team reps are invaluable to any football team. As someone once said, you’re only as good as your scout team. As someone who was a practice squad player for a long time in college, your goal is to frustrate your starters as if it was the real game itself. If you’re doing that and succeeding as a scout team, the starters are going to be more than ready for gameday.
Mitchell Trubisky can solidify a backup role, and if he can indeed master the offense, then the Buffalo Bills will be ready for any situation in the quarterback room. History has seen backup quarterbacks deliver teams to the Super Bowl (Bubby Brister for the Denver Broncos comes to mind). Trubisky may just have the ability to be along for the ride and perform when needed.
