Buffalo Bills 2021 Undrafted Free Agent Profile: Tre Walker
The Buffalo Bills are deep at wide receiver but that didn’t stop them from signing undrafted free agent Tre Walker out of San Jose State. Let’s take a look at what he brings to the team and how he might fit on the Bills.
Measurables/Stats
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 180 pounds
Tre Walker played some as a freshman in 2017 and finished with 26 receptions, 288 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdowns. Those stats increased in 2018 as he played the same number of games as 2017 (nine games) but had 39 receptions, 714 yards, and five receiving touchdowns with an impressive average of 18.3 yards per reception.
In 2019 though was when Walker had a breakout season and finished with 79 receptions, 1,161 receiving yards, and two receiving touchdowns with an average of 14.7 yards per reception. This past season, his numbers dropped in some areas as he had only 45 receptions and 627 receiving yards but roughly the same yards per reception average as the prior year with 13.9 yards. He also finished with more receiving touchdowns than the prior year with four.
Scouting Report by Sports Illustrated
"Walker is a natural deep threat who can apply pressure on a defense in various ways. He can play both inside and outside and brings a versatile skill set that can translate to the next level. His footwork is clean which implies that he is not strictly a vertical-third receiver but somebody who can develop a more diverse route tree."
How he fits with the Buffalo Bills
The one comparison that seems to jump out right away when thinking about how he might fit with the Buffalo Bills is John Brown. The veteran receiver played the last two seasons with the Bills before being released during the offseason.
Both players have similar builds and incredible speed that allows them to get over the top of defenses. While Brown was a deep threat, he was able to work in other routes and that is something that Walker could do as well.
It wouldn’t be fair to say that Tre Walker is John Brown at this point and he will need some development, most likely on the practice squad if he can earn a spot there, but considering the wide receiver position could be changing significantly in the coming years, Walker may be able to earn a spot down the road.
