The Buffalo Bills are certainly paying close attention to the defensive end position. This is one they would like to improve and get younger at. One player that could help in this regard is Carlos Basham Jr. out of Wake Forest. Let’s take a look at his profile and how he could impact this defense with the Bills.

Measurables/Stats

Height: 6’3″

Weight: 274 pounds

Arms: 32.875″

Hands: 9.25″

Carlos “Boogie” Basham Jr. played 42 games over four seasons for Wake Forest. He finished with 173 total tackles, 35.5 tackles for a loss, 19.5 sacks, eight passes defended, seven forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. He was a player that improved year over year during his first three years at Wake Forest and finished with season highs in sacks (10) and tackles for a loss (18.5) in 2019.

This past season though he played in only six games after being diagnosed with COVID-19 and sitting out the bowl game to prepare for the NFL Draft. However, even though he played only six games he was still productive with five sacks and 4.5 tackles for a loss in those six games.

NFL.com Scouting Report by Lance Zierlein

"Three-year starter at defensive end with burly frame, heavy hands and an ability to take on physical rigors of the NFL. His rush attack is more technical and explosive, using active hands, spin counters and a thoughtful approach. His lack of suddenness and edge speed could get him pegged as an early-down end while moving inside to become an interior rusher on passing downs."

Highlights

How he fits with the Buffalo Bills

Carlos Basham Jr. is a prototypical 4-3 defensive end that has great size for the position. At this point, he is a better pass rusher than a run defender but there isn’t any reason to think he can’t improve here.

He is a player that could slot right in as a rookie into the rotation at defensive end and provide a boost in terms of pass rush. The Bills know that they need more production here, especially if they want to get past the Kansas City Chiefs, and Basham could be that answer.

Carlos Basham Jr. is a player that the Buffalo Bills would likely be targeting in the second or third round. The fact that he could contribute as a rookie with the upside to eventually replace Mario Addison or Jerry Hughes would make this is a great pick for the team.
