The past two years, the Buffalo Bills have invested a third round pickin  each NFL Draft at the running back position. However, the results weren’t really stellar this past season and the Bills could be back in the market for another player at this position.

However, the running back position is one where teams have found players emerge who weren’t high picks and the Buffalo Bills have a few at the position already on the roster that given the opportunity could be that boost. This is my grade for the running back position looking at starters but also taking into account depth at the position.

Buffalo Bills Running Backs on the Roster

  • Matt Breida
  • Taiwan Jones
  • Zack Moss
  • Devin Singletary
  • Christian Wade
  • Antonio Williams

Position Grade: C

Last season was a tough year for the running back position as they entered with high expectations but weren’t necessarily able to deliver. However, this wasn’t a big issue because of how well Josh Allen played and how effective the passing game was.

It raises the question of did the Bills even really commit or need to commit, to establishing the run. The other question raised is does the struggles fall entirely on the running backs, or was it the blocking of the offensive line or the playcalling. The most likely scenario is that it is a combination of all three things.

While targeting a running back early, possibly as high as 30, is a potential route but how do they fit into what the Buffalo Bills currently have. There were times that Zack Moss showed he could be a featured back and now with someone like Matt Breida, joining Devin Singletary and Antonio Williams, they have the depth that could provide them a winning combination without having to use their first round pick.

In the end, the running back position is one of the weaker on the roster but it is hard to fault the Buffalo Bills if they don’t add another running back with the potential they already have on the roster.
