Round 3 – 93rd Overall: Payton Turner, EDGE (Houston)

As the NFL Draft gets closer and closer, the selection of Payton Turner makes almost too much sense for it not to happen for the Buffalo Bills. The fit for what the Buffalo Bills are looking for and what Turner would bring gives them great value here in the third round.

In the final two seasons with the University of Houston, Turner had 8.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for a loss in 17 games. The scouting report on The Draft Network describes a player who has all the physical tools but needs some time to develop and learn the position more.

"The best components of Turner’s game are his length, physicality, power, hand combatting skills, and motor. Those traits give him appeal as a pass rusher and run defender. With that said, he needs to clean up his stance, release from his stance, pad level, processing skills, and develop more rush variety. Turner is a versatile defender that has the ability to develop into a meaningful starter. With that said, development is needed and he may not contribute much right away early in his career."

While the Bills would like to have a player who can step in as a rookie and contribute at the defensive end position, they also have the top of the depth chart pretty well locked in with Jerry Hughes, Mario Addison, A.J. Epenesa, and likely Efe Obada rotating in. There won’t be too many snaps available after those four which means Turner could take the rookie season to develop with an eye to being more of a contributor in 2022.
