Last year, one of the biggest free agent signings the Buffalo Bills made was a one-year deal with Daryl Williams. At the time, Cody Ford was expected to be the starting right tackle and after a few down seasons, Williams was viewed mostly as a player who provided good depth at the position.

However, that quickly changed as Daryl Williams would not only go on to win the starting job but start every game for the Bills at right tackle last year. The performance he had was enough to convince the Bills that he could be a long-term answer at the position and agreed to a three-year extension this offseason.

On Wednesday, the Bills signed guard Forrest Lamp to a one-year deal and this move has a number of similarities to the signing of Daryl Williams last year and has the potential to pay huge dividends this season.

Forrest Lamp was once considered a top draft prospect at guard and was ranked by Mike Mayock at NFL.com as the 18th best player in that draft class. He would eventually go in the second round to the Chargers and was considered to be an excellent pick.

However, injuries slowed him down to start his career and after missing the entire 2017 season due to injury then playing in only nine games between 2018 and 2019, many questioned if he could develop into that starting guard.

This past season, Lamp started to put that narrative of draft bust behind him by starting all 16 games at guard for the Chargers. He now has an opportunity to continue that with the Buffalo Bills.

The addition of Forrest Lamp once again creates competition for Cody Ford, who last year moved inside to guard due to Daryl Williams’ play. For the Buffalo Bills, it gives them another offensive lineman who can be an above-average starter at best and a quality depth player at worse on a low-risk deal.
