Round 5

With the second of the Buffalo Bills two original 5th round selections I wanted to continue to focus on offensive additions. The Bills have yet to re-sign gadget offensive weapon Isaiah McKenzie and lost kick/punt returner, Andre Roberts, to the Houston Texans.

Without Roberts or McKenzie, the Buffalo Bills should be targeting a prospect in the draft that is capable of replacing McKenzie in the offense but can also return kicks and punts. With this 5th round pick at 174th overall, I selected former North Carolina Tar Heel wide receiver Dazz Newsome. According to Justin Melo of the draft network, the Buffalo Bills have already met with Dazz Newsome which shows that there is at least some interest in his abilities.

Newsome proved that he can play the gadget role on offense during his time with the Tar Heels. They loved to use him on presnap motions into designed swing pass screens. Newsome has above average speed, but his knack for making defenders miss tackles with elusiveness is what sets him apart.

Newsome was more of a punt returner than a kick returner for North Carolina. However, he did average over 20 yards per kick return on his 7 kick return attempts. It’s obvious that Newsome is better as a punt returner though as he averaged over 11 yards per punt return and brought one back for a touchdown.
