Round 5

Heading into the 5th round, it’s time to start looking at other ways to improve the offense. Considering how great the Buffalo Bills were in 2020 that will be a tough task, but there is certainly room for improvement in terms of the Bills rushing attack in 2021.

This is why I selected PFFs top ranked player on the board with my 5th round pick at 161st overall, former Oklahoma and Ohio State running back Trey Sermon. Sermon played three years as a member of the Oklahoma Sooners and transferred to Ohio State for his senior season last year.

Sermon never really got his chance to be a featured back during his four year collegiate career, but he has always been efficient with his touches. Sermon’s best qualities as a running back are his size, competitive toughness, and contact balance. He is an extremely difficult running back to tackle.

Many have said that the Bills need to add a speed element to their running back room, and while I agree with that, it would be tough to pass on Sermon in the 5th round. He doesn’t have the speed to outrun NFL defenders, but he has the contact balance and tackle breaking ability to gain those extra yards.

Additionally, the way Sermon loves to initiate contact could make him an efficient goal line or short yardage back. It’s not like the Bills are going to get away from what worked for the offense in 2020 and that’s passing the football. In 2021 the Buffalo Bills running backs just need to focus on being efficient when they do get their touches, and Sermon is great at getting at least 4 yards per carry.
