Buffalo Bills met with special teams prospect Avery Williams
With the recent news that former Buffalo Bills return man Andre Roberts has agreed to terms on a two-year deal with the Houston Texans, the Bills are in need of a kick and punt returner. According to Justin Melo of the Draft Network, the Buffalo Bills have already expressed interest in former Boise State return specialist Avery Williams.
Although Roberts didn’t return a punt or kick for a touchdown, he was extremely efficient with his touches. Roberts consistently gave the Buffalo Bills good field position on offense with 9.9 yards per punt return and 30 yards per kick return in 2020. Trying to replace those numbers in the return game next season will be very difficult, but the Bills are getting the ball rolling in the right direction by meeting with Avery Williams.
Williams was one of the best returners in college football during his four year career at Boise State. In each of his four years, Williams returned at least one kick or punt for a touchdown. In his four years at Boise State, Williams averaged 11.6 yards per punt and returned 6 punts for touchdowns. Additionally, Williams averaged 27.4 yards and scored on 3 of his 38 kick return attempts. On top of his ridiculously productive numbers as a returner, Williams also blocked a couple of punts. This type of high level production in all segments of special teams helped him earn Mountain West special teams player of the year twice.
It’s undeniable that Williams can be a special teams ace at the next level even if he doesn’t have the same production as a returner. He has the determination, willingness, and grit to contribute as a core special teamer. Some players think that playing special teams is beneath them, but Williams embraces the importance of good special teams play and it shows in his game.
Williams is listed as a cornerback, however, he will likely get drafted and make an NFL roster because of his special teams contributions. For this reason, it’s tough to project which round Williams will be drafted as a core special teamer at the next level. With that being said, it’s safe to say that Williams will be a day three pick because his cornerback technique lacks refinement.
