With the recent moves the Buffalo Bills have made prior to free agency, it is becoming more obvious what positions they will target in the draft. However, according to Justin Melo of the Draft Network, the Bills have been in contact with Florida kicker prospect Evan McPherson. McPherson has been the best kicker in the SEC during his time at Florida, only missing one extra point on 150 attempts and missing 9 field goals on 60 attempts.

Some will look at this news and wonder why the Buffalo Bills are even remotely interested in a kicker after selecting Tyler Bass in the draft last season. The Bills may not be interested in McPherson for his kicking abilities but rather his punting abilities. Given the money the Bills just spent on re-signing both Matt Milano and Daryl Williams, they are right up against the cap and may decide not to tender restricted free agent punter Corey Bojorquez.

If that is the case the Bills would be in the market for a punter in the draft or free agency, but it is usually cheaper to find one in the draft. It has been a while since McPherson has game reps punting, but before getting to Florida he was a very good punter in high school. According to Kohl’s kicking and punting camp, McPherson was the #5 ranked punter and #1 ranked kicker during his college recruitment process.

This is all speculation but maybe that is why the Buffalo Bills are doing their homework on Evan McPherson, just to explore the possibility of him punting at the NFL level. Additionally, if he can punt in the NFL he would still have the versatility to come in and perform as a place kicker in a pinch. If the Bills brought in McPherson and Bass gets injured, McPherson could be both a punter and an insurance policy to Tyler Bass.
