Buffalo Bills: 6 draft prospects that can replace Isaiah McKenzie
The next draft prospect that could replace McKenzie in 2021 for the Buffalo Bills is former Clemson Tiger, Amari Rodgers. Rodgers may be the most complete receiver on this list, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t capable of making plays for himself once he has the ball in his hands.
At 5’10 and about 210 pounds, Rodgers has the prototypical size of a running back, but the skillset of a wide receiver. Rodgers is another triple threat that can operate as a pass-catcher, ball-carrier, and return specialist. Although Rodgers may have the body of a running back, he wasn’t expected to contribute much in the running game as he only had 6 career carries as a Tiger for 46 yards and one touchdown.
However, Rodgers really did his damage in all areas of the passing game and really broke out in 2020. He had 1,020 receiving yards and scored 7 touchdowns on 77 receptions this past season. Additionally, Rodgers is a quietly productive returner on both punts and kicks. While he only had 2 collegiate kick return attempts, he earned 22 yards on one and 36 on the other. As a punt returner, Rodgers got the bulk of the reps with 66 returns for 529 yards and one return for a touchdown. Not a great, yards per return average of 7.9, but admirable nonetheless.
Rodgers had most of his success while operating out of the slot and earning yards after the catch on bubble screens in the Clemson offense. That isn’t to say he can’t run vertical routes or operate as a perimeter receiver, but the slot is definitely his bread and butter. Although he’s on the shorter side as far as receivers go, his stockiness allows him to be more physical than expected at the catch point and makes it easier for him to break through arm tackles. Rodgers is another prospect the Buffalo Bills might be able to add on day three of the draft, but I wouldn’t be shocked if they liked his game enough to grab him in round three.
