Entering this past season, the Buffalo Bills were thought to have one of the best secondaries in the NFL. While they did struggle at times, this was still a very talented secondary.

Over the past year, the front office has ensured the key players in this group will remain in Western New York for the foreseeable future. The last extension came on Friday when the Buffalo Bills announced Micah Hyde had signed a two-year extension, keeping him in Buffalo through 2023.

Last offseason, the Buffalo Bills agreed to a contract extension with Jordan Poyer, the team’s other starting safety, that ensures he stays with the team through 2022. They also agreed to a four-year extension with All-Pro cornerback Tre’Davious White, who will be with the team through the 2025 season.

When Sean McDermott joined the Buffalo Bills as head coach in 2017, one of the first things he did was completely revamp the secondary. He signed Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer as free agents and then the Bills used their first round pick on Tre’Davious White.

These three players have been key parts of this defense over that time and now will continue to be the foundation that this defense is built on for the next few seasons. Since these three players joined the Bills, they have finished 20th (2017), 1st (2018), 4th (2019), and 13th (2020) in passing yards allowed. The Buffalo Bills have also finished in the Top 10 in each of those seasons in interceptions.

While the front office will still continue to find ways to improve this defense, the fact that they have these players in place makes general manager Brandon Beane’s job just a little bit easier. The fact that these three players are locked in for this secondary for the next few seasons will continue to give the Buffalo Bills one of the top secondaries and pass defenses in the league.
