Buffalo Bills: Making the case to sign cornerback Michael Davis
If the Buffalo Bills are looking for more of an under-the-radar cornerback who can provide good depth, potentially compete for the starting job and is in the early part of his career then Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Michael Davis would make sense.
Career
Michael Davis was an undrafted free agent signing by the Chargers in 2017 and primarily has been the first backup on the field when they suffer an injury at the position. This past season though Davis got to enter the season as the starter and had his best season yet with 64 total tackles, three interceptions and 14 passes defended.
He has also now had back-to-back seasons where he has allowed QB ratings below 80.0 when quarterbacks have thrown in his direction, according to Pro Football Reference.
Why the Buffalo Bills might consider signing Michael Davis
The Buffalo Bills are going to be up against the salary cap this offseason and will be looking for bargains wherever they can find it. Over the past few seasons, the Bills have tried to add older veterans in hopes they can compete with Levi Wallace for the starting job opposite Tre’Davious White.
At times it has worked and even towards the end of this past season, the rotation of Wallace and Josh Norman got the job done.
This offseason though they should be looking for more stability and potentially a long-term solution. Now that solution could be Dane Jackson, who Brandon Beane recently praised, but he isn’t a guarantee to be the full-time starter.
A player like Michael Davis is a younger player, who has starting experience and likely can be added with a bargain free agent deal. The addition of Davis wouldn’t necessarily exclude Dane Jackson from winning the job but gives the coaching staff another player who can step in to be that answer. A trio of Jackson, Davis and Levi Wallace really solidifies the position with experience and youth.
