The Buffalo Bills are likely to make some changes to the running back position this offseason. The addition of Zack Moss last year to pair with Devin Singletary didn’t return the results many expected.

While the front office appears to be doing their due diligence with a number of running backs in the 2021 NFL Draft, it may make more sense to go with a veteran at the position. When considering Singletary is entering only his third season, and Moss his second, having a player with more experience could help stabilize the position.

One of those options could be running back Duke Johnson, who was just released by the Houston Texans. Johnson played his first four years with the Cleveland Browns before being traded to the Texans in 2018.

Aside from just being a veteran back, the addition of Duke Johnson would bring something to the position that this offense has been lacking. During his time in the NFL, Johnson has become one of the best receiving running backs in the league and can line up in the backfield but also can split out and line up in the slot.

For his career, Johnson has 307 receptions on 400 targets for 2,892 receiving yards, 12 receiving touchdowns and a catch percentage of 76.8%. The best season for Duke Johnson came in 2017 when he caught 74 passes for the Browns.

He also has experience sharing a backfield but still being productive. He has averaged under 50% of the offensive snaps in his career but because of his ability as a pass catcher, offensive coordinators find a way to get him on the field.

dark. Next. Could the Buffalo Bills trade up in the first round?

It remains to be seen exactly how the Buffalo Bills are going to improve the position but with them unlikely ready to give up on Devin Singletary or Zack Moss, adding a complementary player like Duke Johnson could be the answer.
