If the Buffalo Bills are looking for a low-cost free agent with a high upside, a player like A.J. Bouye makes sense. The former Broncos cornerback was released last month but could be a starter for this defense next season.

Career

A.J. Bouye started with the Houston Texans and was an undrafted free agent in 2013. He played sporadically the first three years in the league before becoming a starter in 2016 and played well enough to earn a five-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars after that season as a free agent.

In 2017, he had his best season in his career with six interceptions, 18 passes defended and a trip to the Pro Bowl. He would play two more years in Jacksonville before they traded him to the Denver Broncos last offseason for a fourth round pick.

Bouye would play only seven games for the Broncos after ending up on injured reserve after suffering a shoulder injury in Week 1. He would return at the end of October but missed the final four games after being suspended for performance enhancing drugs. He has two games remaining on that suspension and will miss the first two weeks of the upcoming season.

Why the Buffalo Bills should sign A.J. Bouye

The best season Bouye had was in 2017 when he was playing more zone and this is an area he has excelled in. He also was the Jaguars’ number two cornerback with Jalen Ramsey on the other side.

This is a similar role that he would play in Buffalo being the number two with Tre’Davious White on the other side. This could also be a low-cost move for the Bills with the remainder of his suspension still looming and coming off a down year in Denver.

If the front office has a solution for those first two weeks, a player like A.J. Bouye could be a boost for this secondary next season.
