The Buffalo Bills took a gamble with their special teams to start the 2020 season electing to go with rookie Tyler Bass as their starting kicker. However, by the end of the year, it was clear the gamble paid off.

This offseason, the front office faces another tough decision for their special teams’ specialists. Let’s take a look at the players under contract and who is set to be a free agent this offseason.

Under Contract for 2021

Tyler Bass

Reid Ferguson

As I mentioned previously, Tyler Bass had an excellent rookie season even though it got off to a rocky start. After making six of eight field goal attempts against the New York Jets in Week 7, he would miss only one field goal attempt over the final nine regular season games.

He also showed to be very accurate on longer field goal attempts and made 12 of 15 field goal attempts from over 40 yards.

One key part of the special teams unit that is often overlooked is long snapper and this is because the Buffalo Bills have one of the best in Reid Ferguson. He is entering the final year of his contract and could be in line for a contract extension this offseason.

Free Agents

Corey Bojorquez – Restricted Free Agent

The big free agent decision the Buffalo Bills will have to make is whether or not to bring back Corey Bojorquez. After a few shaky seasons, Bojorquez was one of the best punters in the NFL even if he wasn’t asked to punt that often.

The Buffalo Bills offense was one of the best in the league and didn’t have many drives end without points. Due to this, Bojorquez had to punt only 41 times during the regular season.

When he was asked to punt though, he was able to pin the opposing team deep more often than not. He finished the year with the best average per punt in the NFL at 50.8 yards per punt. He also had the longest punt in the league with a 72-yard punt.

The Buffalo Bills would probably like to bring Corey Bojorquez back, it is just a matter of if the two sides can agree on the right number.
