The Buffalo Bills for the second year in a row added to the running back position by selecting Zack Moss in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The hope was that Moss, along with Devin Singletary, would give the Buffalo Bills a good duo at the position. However, the results weren’t there and the Bills could be once again in the market for another running back.

Let’s take a look at the running backs under contract and who is a free agent entering this offseason.

Running Backs Under Contract

Devin Singletary

Zack Moss

Antonio Williams – Signed a Reserve/Future Contract

Christian Wade  – Signed a Reserve/Future Contract

The Buffalo Bills will have their top two running backs returning for next season as Singletary and Moss will still be in their third and second years, respectively, of their rookie contracts.

In addition to those two, the Bills signed Antonio Williams and Christian Wade to Reserve/Future Contracts after the season ended. These are certainly two intriguing names for Bills fans as Williams had arguably the best performance of any running back this past season with over 60 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the second half of Week 17 against the Miami Dolphins.

As for Wade, he was a preseason star in 2019 but hasn’t moved off the practice squad the past two years. The biggest reason is that he was part of the NFL’s International Pathway Program so the Bills had a practice squad exemption for Wade. That exemption has come to an end and the coaching staff will need to decide this coming season if he is ready to be on the active roster, if he remains on the practice squad or if they release him.

Free Agents

T.J. Yeldon – Unrestricted Free Agent

Taiwan Jones – Unrestricted Free Agent

The Buffalo Bills have two running backs from last year’s team that are free agents this offseason. The first is T.J. Yeldon, who joined the Bills as a free agent prior to the 2019 season. However, he has had limited playing time with the most playing time coming in the playoff after Zack Moss suffered a season-ending injury.

The other running back is Taiwan Jones but Jones made most of his impact on special teams and was a key part of that unit. Among the two free agents, Taiwan Jones would be the player most likely to return because of his play on special teams.
