Matt Milano
2020 Season Stats: 10 games played (5 starts), 45 total tackles, 4 tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks, 9 QB hits, 1 interception, 3 passes defended
The Buffalo Bills primarily play a nickel defense and because of that rely heavily on only two linebackers, which is typically Matt Milano. However, Milano’s season this past year was stop and go due to injuries. He suffered a hamstring injury in Week 1 that forced him to miss Week 2 then he suffered a pec injury in Week 4 against the Raiders.
He returned in Week 7 but on a snap count for two games before the Bills placed him on injured reserve. He finally returned in Week 13 but the Bills remained cautious and it wasn’t really until Week 16 that he played a full game.
When he was a full-starter (games where he played 74% or more of the snaps), he had at least six tackles in each game, including three playoff games, and the defense undoubtedly played better. The versatility he brings allows him to make an impact against the run, pressuring the quarterback but also dropping back into coverage.
The Buffalo Bills are going to have a tough decision about whether or not to bring back Matt Milano, but there is no question this defense was better when he was on the field.
